Craft Beer Review – Southern Tier Warlock Imperial Pumpkin Stout

Souther Tier Warlock

Southern Tier Warlock Imperial Pumpkin Stout: Brewed in Lakewood, New York at a strength of 8.6% abv, this imperial stout is brewed with pumpkins and ‘natural flavour’. This is part of their Blackwater Series of beers which includes three other beers worth checking on on their site, including one Creme Brulee beer that keeps eluding me .

Aroma and Appearance: This pours a brown colour with one finger of foam and some small, yet constant bubbles. The aroma is pumpkin pie, chocolate, molasses, nutmeg, graham crackers and ginger bread.

Flavour: Again with the pumpkin pie, some chocolate, coffee, pie crust and booze all up front with black licorice in the middle (yuck) and vanilla and molasses on the finish.

Overall Impression: I really don’t like black licorice, it kind ruins some imperial stouts for me and it didn’t help this one.

Rating: For me personally, below average at 4/10, the licorice was fairly strong and made me kinds of dislike it. A bit too much going on here to be honest, still drinkable but a bit too much.

Food Pairing: This would be interesting poured over ice cream or as a float, perhaps with pumpkin pie gelato in it.

Anyway, I’ll leave you with this video from the German Heavy Metal Band Warlock – All We Are because this review needs something good in it!

  1. I think you would like this one, the licorice is strong however it also tastes exactly like pumpkin pie too so that may put you off. Did you want a bottle if I can find one still? I believe they are still kicking around Bellingham.
