Brewed in craft central Vancouver, BC comes Parallel 49’s Lost Souls Chocolate Pumpkin Porter (6.5% alc, poured at home from a 22oz bottle aged for 6 months).
Aroma and Appearance: Pours a dark brown colour with a half inch or so of foam and has an aroma of Chocolate, Coffee and of course pumpkin
Flavour: Not surprising it has a pumpkin and chocolate taste to it, melded together quite nicely with age and a rich dark chocolate finish with hints of coffee and smoke.
Overall Impression: Very intriguing taste with the aging as the chocolate and pumpkin go together surprisingly well and I was left craving more after finishing. The pleasant aftertaste sticks with you for a long time to the point where you start to pine for this again and again.
Rating: I would rate about 8/10 as in excellent, the aging (even for a short time) worked well with this, it has an awesome label and some good character to it. I was impressed with it, much better that the standard pumpkin beer that most places release. If released again this year, I recommend cellaring it for 6-8 months, but you do have to like pumpkin and chocolate beer to like this one.
Food Pairing: would match up nicely with pumpkin pie or as a dessert on thanksgiving.
Don’t think I have had this one aged but it sure was a nice flavour profile fresh. When it comes back I will have to pick up a few bottles.
