From Salt Lake City, UT comes Uinta – Anniversary Barleywine (a hefty 10.4% alc Barleywine poured from a bottle while visiting Seattle).
Aroma and Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with minimal foam and is full of dark fruit, raisin and caramel aroma.
Flavour: this barleywine hits you with sweet molasses malt and plum and finishes with bitter, piney hops and finally as it warms the caramels start to arrive.
Overall Impression: at first I wasn’t too impressed as I am a huge barleywine fan and this one wasn’t initially all that great or to style. However as it warmed I started to be able to taste the caramels and other subtle flavours that brought it back into my good books. Barleywines are good sipping beers, best to let this one warm up a touch longer to get the best flavour.
Rating: I give it a 7/10 overall as in very good, but not something I would rush back to as there are much better barleywines out there.
Food Pairing: blue cheese, figs, or figs stuffed with blue cheese
Gland to know there are more Barleywine nuts out there! I always love finding rare Barleywines. Would love to try that one.
I think I found it in Lynnwood, I am total Barleywine nut, let me know if there are any your are trying to track down and I’ll keep my eye out when I cross the border.
I don’t even know what ones I would want as there are so many Barleywines I have never even heard of.
