From San Franciso, CA comes Anchor Brewing’s Old Foghorn Barleywine (8.8% alc poured from a bottle while visiting Seattle).
Aroma and Appearance: Pours a dark amber with some foam, lots of toffee and raisin aroma and some good bubbles rising from the bottom.
Flavour: this one hits you nicely with loads of sweet toffee, malt with some nice fruitiness and floral hop notes and finishes a bit dry and bitter.
Overall Impression: this is a good barleywine, no doubt about it. It hits all the right notes, is very drinkable and quite inexpensive compared to its counter parts. I wouldn’t cellar this, rather I would drink it now as I think it has already hit it’s sweet spot. A good one to drink while you patiently wait for your Thor’s Hammer to age.
Rating: I give it a 8/10 overall as in excellent, something that I would buy again, but not something I would cellar.
Food Pairing: blue stilton or caramel cheesecake
