Townsite Brewing Timewarp Wet Hop Pale Ale: Fresh hop season continues and this review features one from Powell River, BC that was brewed to a strength of 5.5% abv with 60 IBUs worth of fresh hops from nearby Windfall Farms and apparently some hops from Texada Island – and I thought they only grew other “crops” on this island. Albeit not a new offering, this is the first time I was finally able to get a hold of this release.
Aroma and Appearance: Featuring time travelling head brewer Cedric on the label, the beer pours a clear copper colour with three fingers of foam and a medium level of carbonation (sorry for the blurry beer pic). Its aroma consists of oily lemon citrus, peaches, limes, strawberries, bitter tea leaves, biscuits and grapefruit rind; an impressive and complex aroma to say the least.
Flavour: Lots of big toffee malts up front with subtle oily herbal hops and whole wheat bread in the middle, this beer finishes with a herbal earthy graininess that settles into bitter green tea leaves on the aftertaste.
Overall Impression: I thought this was a solid pale ale with a big grainy feel to it, some fresh hop presence and that it was an interesting take on the style.
Rating: I give it a very good rating of 7/10, a tasty beer that didn’t blow me away but was still a very nice addition to the fresh hop season, even if it was a bit more subtle than I was hoping for.
Food Pairing: I think the herbs and malts would pair well with a mushroom based tortellini dish with a mild sauce and letting the earthy herbal notes complement each other.

The beer must have been in the middle of a timewarp.
