Craft Beer Review – San Miguel Brewery Red Horse Beer (8% aged for 1 year)

Red Horse Beer

San Miguel Brewery Red Horse Beer: Day 10 of my Advent Calendar exchange with my father, featuring a pale lager from the Philippines that was cellared for 1 year in a “what the heck, why not” kind of way. This is actually a malt liquor and if you read through online ratings will give you some good laughs, but I had this without reading anything prior to give it a chance and I was kind of surprised to be honest.

Aroma and Appearance: This pours a clear gold colour with lots of bubbles and two fingers of white foam that lead into an aroma of light hay, cereal malt and hints of lemon.

Flavour: Very similar to the aroma, cereal malt, hay, lemon with some pear flavours and an overall refreshing flavour and creamy texture. For 8% abv, this was way more balanced that it should have been and there were no off flavours or oxidization present liek in many of the commercial pale lagers here.

Overall Impression: This was almost too drinkable, I could see a beer like this leading to many bad decisions on a night out as it drinks like a session beer, but packs double the abv punch. Seriously, I think I finished this in about 2-3 minutes tops, it goes down a little too easy.

Rating: Perhaps a bit of a guilty pleasure beer, 6/10 rating – better than it should be!

Food Pairing: Get some authentic Pancit Palabok to go with this, that would work very well.

I found a good commercial for this beer featuring none other than Manny Pacquiao, it’s good for a giggle.
