Craft Beer Review – Ballast Point Sculpin IPA

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA

Ballast Point Brewing Company – Sculpin IPA: Brewed in San Diego, CA this IPA ranks #5 overall on the ratebeer.com IPA category putting it as one of the best IPA’s in the world according to individual ratings and reviews. It is brewed at a strength of 7.0% abv with 70 IBUs and according to their web description is hopped at 5 different stages over the course of it’s creation. Needless to say, this was an exciting find to which I was more than happy to open up and enjoy on an evening where it was much needed.

Aroma and Appearance: It pours a clear honey gold colour with an inch of foam and multiple streams of small bubbles in the beer. The aroma was fruity, mostly peach and mango with some biscuit malt on the side.

Flavour: It starts with a honey sweetness with a light biscuit malt and peach in the middle, much like the aroma, followed by a piney lemon citrus bitter resin finish that is very pleasing.

Overall Impression: I like IPA’s that showcase both hops and malts, this one does it very well.

Rating: It is an excellent beer, 8/10 and one I would buy again.

Food Pairing: Fish tacos with peach salsa would be perfect.
