VIB – Black Betty Blackberry Saison: Is a blackberry saison brewed in Victoria, BC at a strength of 5.5% abv and was enjoyed at home from a can in a snifter glass.
Aroma and Appearance: It pours a clear golden copper with a bit of foam and lots of tiny bubbles in the glass. The aroma is pretty much just blackberry and some peppery spice.
Flavour: The flavour is blackberry tart, sweet, some clove spic in there especially on the finish with more blackberry jam in the aftertaste.
Overall Impression: It’s a decent summer beer, but i don’t really love blackberries and they were pretty strong in this offering.
Rating: I give it an average rating 5/10, its drinkable, very one dimensional and the blackberries come through too strong for my liking.
Food Pairing: It would pair up nicely with some crackers and goat cheese.
As I am learning through trying a lot of different fruit beers, I don’t love the one’s that add sweetness to the beer. I like tartness (raspberries, huckleberries) without the sweetness.
Gosh, that was a brave move from the brewer. You think this will be a regular beer or it’s a one off never to be seen again?
It seems to be popular with the fruity cooler loving crowd and some of the craft beer fans that like fruit beers, but not for me.
