Craft Beer Review – Moon Under Water “This is Hefeweizen”

Moon Under Water Hefeweizen

Moon Under Water – This is Hefeweizen: This wheat beer is brewed in Victoria, BC at a strength of 5.5% and was enjoyed in a new 22oz beer glass on a hot spring evening.

Aroma and Appearance: Pours a hazy light copper colour with lots of foam, good head retention and lots of tiny bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. The aroma is primarily bananas and spice.

Flavour: I get a lot of fruit, clove and banana from this one up front, with a filling malty yet flat mouth feel and a very estery, acidic, sour and spicy finish (likely from the open fermentation).

Overall Impression: I wanted to have this soon after having the Central City one just to compare them and at first I wasn’t loving this one, however it really grew on me as I drank it. Weirdly enough, despite the foam in this beer the carbonation was not noticeable when drinking and it left me wanting something more from it.

Rating: I give it a 7/10 (very good) as the flavour profile was great, however I was missing the carbonation in the mouth feel of the beer which would have really gone well with the spices.

Food Pairing: cheesecake or banana bread

What do you think is the best local wheat beer? I know King Heffy by Howe Sound is pretty great, will have to review that one soon!
