Powell Street Right Kind of Crazy Double IPA: This is a 150 IBU hop monster of a beer brewed in Vancouver, BC to a strength of 9% abv. According to their website description it is made with Columbus, Amarillo and the new Azacca hop variety so I guess move over Mosaic, the beer world has a new favourite hop with many more to come.
Aroma and Appearance: It pours a clear pale golden colour with two fingers of white foam and some insanely slow rising carbonation bubbles. The aroma consists of tangerine, lemon, nectarines, peach skin and biscuits.
Flavour: Upfront, this hop forward beer makes its presence known with a whirlwind of tangerine, lemon and fruity citrus notes that eventually succumb to some nice doughy biscuit malt. In the middle of the beer, caramel malts dominate while some peach skin texture and flavour sneaks in and orange juice nips at your tongue. Finally, this beer finishes with a wave of pine resin, floral and grapefruit bitterness that just sits at the back of your palate forever, begging you to have another sip of this fantastic beer.
Overall Impression: Damn fine beer, very reminiscent of some of the ever so popular California double IPA’s that have a similar finish and overall flavour profile.
Rating: Awesome at 9/10, drink this fresh for the best experience and let it warm up slightly, about 15 minutes out of the fridge to allow the malts to reveal themselves properly.
Food Pairing: Spicy chicken soft tacos smothered in sour cream, hot sauce and guacamole would be intense enough to stand up to this beer.
Here’s a pretty decent presentation given by Nathan Smith at the 2014 National Homebrew Competition which gives great a run down on some of the new experimental hop varieties on the market like Azacca. I suggest you subscribe to Chop & Brew’s Youtube Channel, it’s a good one for any craft beer fan!
Ok that sounds epic!
Seriously, just a great example of the style, get some, fast!
Have to try and get a bottle tomorrow. Only one though. I have way to much beer and only one person at home that drinks it.
Sounds great! The beer and the tacos! Could turn into tonight’s dinner plans..
Seriously such a good beer… Cheers and I hope your dinner plans work out!
