Sierra Nevada/Victory – Beer Camp Across America Alt Route Altbier: A collaboration with Victory Brewing Company using a hybrid lager/ale yeast that is fermented cooler than normal and is brewed at a strength of 6.6 % with 50 IBUs. I have been impressed with the few Victory beers I have had, so I had high hopes for this one.
Aroma and Appearance: It pours a dark amber with a small finger of foam and one tiny bubble stream near the middle of the glass. The aroma is toffee, dark fruits and herbal spices.
Flavour: It has a very pleasant toffee sweet malt flavour upfront with a nutty caramel middle that mores into an earthy dry chocolate bitterness.
Overall Impression: Very nice, this style of beer should be made more often.
Rating: Excellent at 8/10, bitter sweet combo is in perfect balance here.
Food Pairing: Those caramel chocolate covered salty pretzel sticks that Starbucks makes would pair nicely with this one.
That is interesting. I have never heard of using a lager/ale hybrid yeast. Sounds quite interesting.
I’d love to see this style of beer more, I like the one Four Winds makes but rarely see it in North America. Hopefully as craft beer gains popularity more places will produce beers like this one.
