Spinnakers – Blue Bridge Double Pale Ale: Is a double pale ale made in Victoria, BC at a strength of 8.2% abv and was enjoyed at home poured from a can into a pub style glass. Apparently they used to call this a double IPA, but have correctly chosen to rename it closer to its true style of double pale ale.
Aroma and Appearance: It pours a dark copper with 1/2 inch of foam and some small bubbles were noticed in the glass. The aroma is biscuit malt, some mango, orange and floral notes with lots of caramel.
Flavour: The flavour is very malt forward with chewy biscuit malt up front, lots of caramel, some orange, mango and refreshing fruit in the middle with a mild bitter herbal finish that leaves you wanting more.
Overall Impression: I was a big fan of the malts in this one and the caramels, it made it a real pleasure to drink.
Rating: I give it an excellent rating of 8/10, it has lots of flavour, is well priced and packs a nice punch.
Food Pairing: The heavy caramels in this would make it pair nicely with a caramelized onion cheese if you can find one (Choices or Trader Joe’s has them)
I always like to check online ratings after I finished my ratings just so what others thought, I could believe how bad this was rated online. It seems a lot of people were offended by them calling it a double IPA or maybe they had some go bad. Either way, be sure to give this one a try!
Good stuff! Spinnakers had a booth at this weekend’s Vancouver Craft Beer Week (VCBW) and all their beers were unique and full of flavors! A good brand to keep returning to.
