Craft Beer Review – Howe Sound Anvil Island Dark Lager

Howe Sound Anvil Island Dark LagerHowe Sound – Anvil Island Dark Lager: This is a Schwarzbier style lager that is brewed in Squamish, BC at a strength of 5.5% and 21 IBU’s, which is named after my favourite island to gaze at while the sun sets in Porteau Cove, was poured (twice) from a massive 1L bottle into a 22oz glass at home. Thank goodness it is only 5.5% abv, given the size of the bottle.

Aroma and Appearance: Pours a nice dark brown colour, with a huge head of foam and a very effervescent carbonation. The aroma is complex with dark coffee beans, toasted marshmallow, grass, hay, and a hint of cocoa.

Flavour: It starts with a lot of chocolate, some sweet malt, more dark chocolate with a nice light mouth feel followed by a grassy finish throwing in some dark roasted coffee notes just for fun.

Overall Impression: I love the combination of chocolate malt with lager yeast, the name is perfect and means a lot to me and quite frankly it’s very easy to drink while still being interesting.

Rating: I give it an excellent rating of 8/10, I make a point to pick up their dark lager’s every year and this one doesn’t disappoint at all.

Food Pairing: Would pair well with a char-grilled burger (craving one now).

This is right up there with Hermann’s Dark Lager, I can’t decide which one is better to be honest as they are both great!
