Dogfish Head Saison du Buff: Day 5 of my Advent Calendar exchange with my father, featuring a Dogfish Head Saison herbal beer brewed at a strength of 6.8% abv with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme herbs. This is actually a collaboration between Stone, Victory and Dogfish head an BUFF stands for Breweries United for Freedom of Flavour aka “a noble endeavor with the goal to highlight the passion and camaraderie of the American craft brew movement” via thier site description.
Aroma and Appearance: This pours a very bubbly golden cloudy colour with one inch of white foam and an aroma largely dominated by parsley, rosemary with hints of thyme.
Flavour: This is a very unique beer, with grainy malts, loads of the aforementioned herbs and some coriander spice with more rosemary on the finish.
Overall Impression: Quirky, yet enjoyable. It had a bit of time to mellow, which is probably good for a beer like this.
Rating: Very good beer, overall 7/10 rating.
Food Pairing: With the strong herbal profile, this beer should be paired with either goat cheese or basically any good quality cut of lamb.
Here’s some history behind the BUFF name and idea for this beer. The video is pretty funny and matches the attitude of this beer rather nicely!
