BC Beer Bloggers Local Winter Favourites Part 1 – Dead Frog Winter Beeracle Beer #1

BC Bloggers Winter Beericle

BC Beer Bloggers Local Winter Favourites – This special review is part of a multi-blog collaboration between five BC Beer Bloggers (including a guest from over the mountains in Alberta) where we each chose our top three local winter releases and are blogging about them. Please take a look at the bottom of this review for the other links to see all the beers we chose in no particular order and bookmark these sites so you can check them often. I chose this particular beer for a couple of reasons, first off and most important is that it tastes really good, followed closely by the fact that is has a great name, fun label and is a BC brewery that is doing a pretty good job of re-branding it self over the last couple of years. They have really been upping their quality, their 22 oz bottle releases and basically a few years ago eliminated all but one of their regular beers in order to totally reinvent themselves.

Dead Frog Brewery Winter Beeracle: Is a Winter Ale brewed in Aldergrove, BC at a strength of 7.5% abv that is an annual favourite of mine. This year’s release is a different recipe, with some different specialty malts and completely different hops than their 2013 version, while still containing orange peel and a similar IBU rating.

Aroma and Appearance: It pours a dark mahogany colour with lots of little bubbles that rise up to form a small finger of tan coloured foam. The aroma is a bit of dark chocolate covered cherry, brown sugar, cocoa and orange peel.

Flavour: Similar to the aroma, I got chocolate and orange peel up front with dark fruits, nuts and earth in the middle and a cocoa bitterness that rounds out this lovely winter ale.

Overall Impression: Overall great, hits a lot of familiar notes that remind you of the season.

Rating: Solid 8/10 as in excellent, one I will continue to buy every single year they make it.

Food Pairing: You could go a couple of different ways with this one, but I would try it with a couple of Terry’s Chocolate Orange slices as I think it will bring our more orange peel. I’ll be sure to buy another and try that this year.

Participating Bloggers: be sure to check them daily, I’ll add in their links as they go up!
