Moylan’s Brewery Old Blarney Barleywine: Brewed in Novato, CA at strength of 10% abv with 62 IBUs, this barleywine and was poured from a 22 oz bottle into a snifter glass at home.
Aroma and Appearance: This one poured a dark amber with some small bubbles on the side of the glass that lead to just a touch of foam at the top. The aroma was very heavy on the caramels, toffees, sweet bread with some booziness.
Flavour: This is a heavy toffee flavoured barleywine with deep notes of toffee, caramel, molasses, with hints of nuts and plums and a dry brown sugar finish.
Overall Impression: Warmed to cask temperature, it is wonderful. Age would likely help even more, I have no idea when this was bottled so I’ll assume it was about 6-12 months old.
Rating: It was a 9/10, so many good flavours in this one with potential for 10/10 with age.
Food Pairing: A nice blue stilton, blue cheese or even a rich caramelized onion cheddar would work well here.
I love these types of barleywines and always pick up any new bottle I find, many more reviews to come! I think I’ll add this to my buy more and cellar list.
