Hair of the Dog Blue Dot Double IPA: Brewed by one of my absolute favourite breweries of all time, this not so double IPA is brewed at a strength of 7% abv with 80 IBUs and was purchased in Oregon on a recent trip. Needless to say I was pretty excited to crack this one open.
Aroma and Appearance: For a double IPA the colour is noticeably light pouring a clear golden yellow with one finger of foam and some very tiny bubbles in the center. The aroma was light tangerine and lemon citrus with some biscuit malt and grapefruit.
Flavour: It starts with a very heavy citrus flavour with a bit of biscuit malt, some grass and you can just barely taste the rye malts before you get hit with the dry grapefruit bitter finish.
Overall Impression: Actually a bit dissapointed because I had hyped it up so much in my mind, the malt bill was a little odd (Pilsner and Rye Malt) and wasn’t something I got excited about when consuming.
Rating: Very good 7/10, despite it not living up to my expectations the beer it self was still very good just not excellent.
Food Pairing: The lighter malts and citrus hops would lead me to suggest a blackened cajun chicken salad or sandwich.
This beer is so very different from their old ale style beers, I wonder if they just wanted to put an IPA on the market?

I really enjoyed this one actually. Wish I took notes but I was not in the mood when I drank it.
I am pretty sure I over hyped it, but I thought the malt bill was a touch boring in an otherwise very good beer. More like a lost opportunity!
If I remember correctly this beer was taken and barrel aged with some extra stuff to make Red Dot. If so maybe they needed that very basic malt and hop bill to get the desired effect for that release. They do not usually make IPA’s after all.
Interesting, I am headed to Portland soon and will have to grab some rarer HOTD beers while visiting.
