In late February 2017, Dageraad Brewing launched a new year round beer called Dageraad White, which is a Belgian style spiced Wheat Beer (aka Witbier). I was very excited to see a year round Witbier on the market, something that has been missing locally in my opinion. In fact, I’d say other than the seasonal White Bark release from Driftwood Brewery which is apparently now a core line up beer as well (although I never see it), I rarely seem to be able to find any other year round local Witbier options worth drinking until now. Finally, we have a proper bottle conditioned, local spicy Witbier available any time of the year and that my friends is worth celebrating over and over again!

Aroma and Appearance: It pours with one finger of non lacing white foam that pillows on top of a very effervescent cloudy pale golden coloured beer. The aroma introduces itself as a mix of spicy clove and coriander before softening into some whole wheat bread, cereal grains and a subtle note of creamy porridge.

Flavour: The beer is very subtle up front with a really light hay malt base that’s nuanced with yeast and a generally light bodied middle which is present due to the effervescent carbonation. As the malt subsides hints of lemon and estery coriander envelop the finish while palate warming cloves and dry textured wheat are exposed in the long, lingering aftertaste.

Overall Impression: It is fairly refreshing at the start and satisfyingly spicy on the finish, so it keeps you craving that next sip over an over again. Dageraad beers have some of the very best price to flavour ratios on the market, especially for a properly bottle conditioned beer, so I am always down to try their new releases.

Rating: I gave it a very good rating of 7.5/10 and I’m really excited to see how this beer develops over the next couple of brewing cycles.

Food Pairing: Grilled scallops, plain goat cheese or a garden salad.
