Craft Beer Review – Epic Brewing Elder Brett

Epic Brewing Elder Brett - Saison Brett Golden Ale

Epic Brewing Elder Brett – Saison Brett Golden Ale: Purchased at Total Wines & More in Lynnwood, WA and brewed in collaboration with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing, aged in wine barrels this is the batch #4 release at 9.1% abv with an undisclosed but likely low IBU. This particular batch was brewed in Salt Lake City, UT during November 2012 and was packaged in December 2013 according to their website description.

Aroma and Appearance: As pictured, the beer is a clear yellow gold colour with a small finger of foam and lots of bubbles. The aroma is oak, grape must, spicy cayenne peppers, hay and horse blanket.

Flavour: The flavour is very oakey with lots of green grape must and slightly spiced farmhouse funk with a very light effervescent mouth feel due to the carbonation that finishes with a dry apple tartness that is very intriguing.

Overall Impression: Very white wine like, with spicy funk – it is a pretty cool beer.

Rating: Excellent at 8/10, the heavy oak takes a little bit to get used to however it adds a lot of character to this one.

Food Pairing: Go with a poached white fish like sole or halibut with this one, poached with spices and white wine to make it interesting.
